Find out how to check your birth certificate from home, in minutes, through the official service
Did you know you can check your birth certificate online from anywhere in Mexico or even from abroad?
Thanks to the system introduced by the Government of Mexico, you can now access this document without visiting the Civil Registry. It’s fast, reliable, and very easy.
In this article, I’ll explain how to do it step by step so you can check your birth certificate in minutes and complete any procedure with complete confidence
🌐 Where can you check your birth certificate?
The official, authorized website for checking your birth certificate is the government portal:
On this platform, you can enter your personal information and check whether your birth certificate has been digitized and is ready to download or print. You don’t need an agent or intermediary, and you don’t have to pay to check it
🧭 Step 1: Go to the Gob.mx portal
Go directly to the official website from your computer, tablet, or phone. Once there, select “Check and print birth certificate.” Make sure you’re on the authentic website to avoid scams or fake pages. Gob.mx is the only site authorized by the government for this procedure
📝 Step 2: Enter your personal information or CURP
The system will ask you to choose between these two options
CURP
Personal information: full name, date of birth, state and municipality of registration, and the name of your father or mother
It’s essential to enter the information exactly as it appears on your original birth certificate. Even a small spelling error can prevent the system from finding your document
🔄 Step 3: Check whether your birth certificate has been digitized
After you enter the information, the system will search automatically. If your birth certificate is in the database, a preview showing its basic information will appear. You can then check that the information is correct and that the certificate is available to download and print
If your birth certificate appears, you can continue with the next steps. If it doesn’t, I’ll explain what to do later
✅ What information can you check?
When you check your birth certificate online, you can view
Your full name
Date and place of birth
Parents’ names
CURP (if included on the certificate)
Folio number and civil registry office
This information lets you check for errors or discrepancies with other documents, or simply confirm that everything is correct before handling legal, school, immigration, or banking matters
💡 Is there a fee to check your birth certificate?
No. Checking your birth certificate is completely free. You may have to pay only if you decide to download or print the document, depending on the state where the certificate was registered. The initial check is free of charge
📉 What should you do if your birth certificate doesn’t appear in the system?
If, after entering your information, the system says that the certificate could not be found, there may be several reasons
Your certificate has not yet been digitized
There is an error in the information you entered
Your record was registered in a state that has not yet migrated all its records
In that case, it’s best to visit the Civil Registry where your birth certificate was registered and ask for it to be added to the national digital database. This process is free and will let you check and print your certificate online in the future
🛡️ Is checking your birth certificate online safe?
Yes. The Gob.mx portal has security certificates, data encryption, and direct validation with the national civil registry system. Only you can access your information, and it is not stored in any external database. In addition, each certificate includes a QR code and a verification number that can be used to confirm its authenticity with any institution
