Atlántico: Transportation Subsidy for Students in 2025

To help university students stay enrolled in 2025, students in Atlántico received confirmation of the transportation subsidy for the new year.

Governor’s Announcement

The announcement was made on Friday, January 17, by department Governor Eduardo Verano, who explained that students from the municipalities would receive the benefit, ensuring a significant discount on their fares.

“In Atlántico, transportation will no longer be an obstacle to education! In 2025, students in our municipalities will receive a subsidy covering 40% of the fare,” said the governor of Atlántico.

Subsidy details

According to information shared by the departmental administration, the benefit is expected to begin in February, made possible by a contribution of 1,500 million pesos from the Departmental Government.

Student Reactions

The news was welcomed by students who, in most cases, had to live in Barranquilla to save on transportation costs or spend more than 10,000 pesos a day to attend classes.

Commitment to education

Karina Llanos Torres, head of Social Capital for the Atlántico Departmental Government, highlighted this incentive, which is being reinstated in 2025 for university students in the department.

Subsidy Funding

Assembly member Camilo Torres Villalba highlighted the partnership with the transportation companies, which also showed their commitment to education.

“The Departmental Government will cover 20%, and the companies will cover another 20%, for a total of 40%. This partnership will make it possible to expand coverage to more young people, especially those who live in municipalities,” Torres Villalba stressed.

This initiative marks an important step toward educational inclusion and support for young people in Atlántico. With the transportation subsidy in place, more students are expected to be able to attend higher education institutions without transportation costs becoming a significant burden on their budgets.

Higher education is a crucial investment in young people’s future. Educational dropout affects thousands of students in Colombia, and the subsidy aims to address this problem by making it easier for young people who want to continue their education to do so.

Governor Verano has reaffirmed his commitment to education. These actions aim to foster an environment where every student can thrive and focus on their studies without financial distractions. Support for student transportation benefits not only students but also has a positive impact on their families and communities.

The transportation companies participating in this project will also see a return in the form of increased demand for their services, creating a cycle of economic and social benefits in the region. Public-private partnerships are essential to the success of initiatives like this and offer a model that could be replicated in other departments across the country.

With the subsidy launching in February 2025, thousands of students in Atlántico are expected to take advantage of this unique opportunity to continue their studies and contribute to the development of their communities. Education is the foundation of sustainable progress, and this subsidy shows that collaboration and joint effort can bring about major changes in the lives of young Colombians.
